What started this

I am a children's librarian in an urban library and am always looking for educational and fun programming to provide my after school crowd.  This is challenging and can be aggravating - so when a local organization was sponsoring an Educator Expo, I thought why not - it is free.

Now, imagine a large room and hallway filled with a slew of presenters from the tri-state showing off the opportunities they can offer me and my organization.  But there are some problems:

Problem 1 - Some of the cool, cheap programming is only cheap for schools not so much for libraries.  How frustrating that as a librarian I am not seen as an educator who qualifies for these programs.  My after school crowd  is larger then most classrooms.

Problem 2 - Most of the presenters that will come to the library I already know about.

Problem 3 - Not all presenters that are exhibiting at the expo do outreach.

Its a bust, I have wasted time, head down in disappointment.....but wait....what is this....incubating chicks for a very very reasonable price.  I must have.  So begins the journey of me, my co-workers, the library, my patrons and the chicks.

I sign up for this unique and great opportunity but because of how we schedule programming at the library I now must wait for 4 months prior to the journey beginning.  I am excited and share the news with my co-workers.  Instead of being excited they begin to ask questions...questions I cannot answer.  See I am an optimist and believe that everything will work out - what could go wrong - I have a professional who shall guide our adventure, who has seen my space.  Thankfully my professional answered all of their questions and I am excited again.

Question 1 - What if the eggs hatch and we are not here?  We are getting the eggs on a Wednesday around 2:30 - so they shall hatch 21 days from then - we will be there.

Question 2 - What if the eggs do not hatch?  Out of a dozen eggs typically 10 - 11 will hatch, my professional has never had none hatch.  Cool no crying children.

Question 3 - What will they eat? The first 36-48 hours they do not need to eat but my professional will be there the day of the hatching.

Now we wait for .....
4 months
3 months
2 months
1 month
And finally the day of our adventure begins.
